Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Take COVID-19 test

There are testing centers on and off Campus.

  • Testing on Campus

If you would like to have the PCR testing for COVID-19 on a self-paid basis at the price of KZT 5 000 at University Health Center (UHC) on Campus, please complete this form .

The PCR testing (swab taking procedure) is available on Campus in the morning time from 8:30 on Monday through Friday (5 days per week with exception of holidays) on an appointment basis

The e-mail confirmation will be sent with the details on the PCR testing once UHC reviews your registration and clarify the details for the requested PCR testing. It is usually 1-2 days before the testing.

Please, ensure your timely arrival as indicated in the confirmation and do not visit UHC without confirmation to avoid waiting for lines and mutual inconveniences.

The payment is processed at the reception with the credit cards only (no cash is accepted).

  • Testing off-Campus

The RT-PCR test costs KZT 5,000 (payment by card) for NU Community members (including sub-contractors) upon presentation of your NU IDs. Do not eat, drink, brush your teeth, smoke, etc. for three hours prior to the RT-PCR test.

To book an appointment, please use this form.

Please contact your School and Research admin teams if you are required PCR testing for your work and studies, and follow the instructions accordingly unless you may have instructions from the representatives of the University Healthcare Department to use this sign-up for your PCR testing.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should immediately isolate to prevent community transmission. Once you are isolated, please be in touch with your health care provider and HSE (hse@old.nu.edu.kz) to determine if treatment is appropriate.

Ashyq app

An increasing number of public places, cafes and restaurants require the “Ashyq” app. From 12 May, the Ashyq app will be required by the Nur-Sultan Airport and from 21 May, by the Almaty Airport as well. This app enhances contact tracing and is common in many countries. It was developed by the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry together with the Ministry of Health to monitor and control the epidemic situation in the country.

When visiting a location included in the Ashyq project, visitors are color-tagged: green (negative PCR test), blue (no PCR or contacts), yellow (identified as a contact), and red (positive PCR test). For many venues and events over 30 people, the Ashyq app is mandatory.

You can download the app from the Apple Store and Google Play.

The content of the Ashyq app will be expanded on July 1 to include vaccination records; further, the range of applications/usages of the Ashyq app will be extended to include air transport, more businesses and even universities.

FAQ

Following information is provided by the World Health Organization:

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

Basic protective measures against the new coronavirus

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. COVID-19 is still affecting mostly people in China with some outbreaks in other countries. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

  • Wash your hands frequently

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

  • Maintain social distancing

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

  • Practice respiratory hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

  • Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider

Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

UPDATES: CAMPUS PROTECTION AGAINST COVID-19, WORK-FROM-HOME. AND OTHER MATTERS AFFECTING ON-CAMPUS RESIDENTS

Dear NU Faculty and Staff,

these are trying times as we have never experienced this type of acute and unpredictable crisis on such a global scale. Let’s pull together as a real Community and be considerate to each other.

Our Health and Safety Department will send out more information on the state of emergency and as usual, follow up with regular updates.

Please do frequently check the following website: https://beta.egov.kz/memleket/entities/kkkbtu?lang=en

Status of Coronavirus on Campus

  1. According to globally applied Ministry of Health regulations on dealing with the coronavirus, the medical escort team must wear HAZMAT suits as a precaution when escorting people to hospital quarantine.
  2. So, if you see teams wearing HAZMAT suits on campus, do not be alarmed.
  3. There is no need to test faculty and staff for the virus nor to be quarantined unless test results turn out positive. Please also note that the likelihood of virus transmission in mid-air is negligible as all modern aircraft have advanced air circulation systems (more than 20 times per hour) that filter out all viruses and bacteria.
  4. If you would like to have your health status monitored on a regular basis, please contact the Department of Health and Safety with cc to the Vice President NU Medicine.
  5. All buildings including residential blocks and public spaces on campus are already being cleaned more thoroughly and with more potent cleaning agents.
  6.  If you are sick, you should stay home and contact a doctor.
  7. On-campus medical facilities will remain open.

We participated in a peer learning video-conference where colleagues from the Asian Universities Alliance, augmented by a couple of European Universities (University of Geneva and the University of Bologna) reported on the steps taken to prevent and mitigate against the spread of the coronavirus, and diagnose and treat COVID-19.

All universities are facing similar challenges as we do: shifting to online teaching and assessment; ensuring admission of high-quality students, scheduling the end of spring semester followed by summer semester offerings, possible knock-on effects to the new academic year, dispersion of students and faculty, need for enhanced student engagement and pastoral care, internship issues, and destressing campus life. However, important and very inspiring, universities also showcased how they contribute to national efforts to overcome COVID-19, through analysis, diagnostics, treatment, and technical innovation and service to society; in short, doing what universities do best: making concentrated brainpower work.

General questions about COVID-19 by WHO

https://www.who.int/ru/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/q-a-coronaviruses

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don't feel unwell. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment. Around 1 out of every 6 people who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to develop serious illness. People with fever, cough and difficulty breathing should seek medical attention.

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales. These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. People can also catch COVID-19 if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. This is why it is important to stay more than 1 meter (3 feet) away from a person who is sick.
WHO is assessing ongoing research on the ways COVID-19 is spread and will continue to share updated findings.

Studies to date suggest that the virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact with respiratory droplets rather than through the air. See previous answer on “How does COVID-19 spread?”

The main way the disease spreads is through respiratory droplets expelled by someone who is coughing. The risk of catching COVID-19 from someone with no symptoms at all is very low. However, many people with COVID-19 experience only mild symptoms. This is particularly true at the early stages of the disease. It is therefore possible to catch COVID-19 from someone who has, for example, just a mild cough and does not feel ill. WHO is assessing ongoing research on the period of transmission of COVID-19 and will continue to share updated findings.

The risk of catching COVID-19 from the feces of an infected person appears to be low. While initial investigations suggest the virus may be present in feces in some cases, spread through this route is not a main feature of the outbreak. WHO is assessing ongoing research on the ways COVID-19 is spread and will continue to share new findings. Because this is a risk, however, it is another reason to clean hands regularly, after using the bathroom and before eating.
