Ali Turkyilmaz is an Associate Professor of Engineering Management and Industrial Engineering. His research and teaching area include production and service systems management, operations management, engineering management and economy, construction management, digital transformation, quality management, lean production, new product and service development, data analysis, and decision support systems.
Dr. Turkyilmaz has served as an editorial board member of numerous journals, including Industrial Management and Data Systems, International Journal of Management and Enterprise Development (IJMED), International Journal of Supply Chain Management, and International Journal of Services and Standards. He is the (co)author of more than 80 publications in various journals and conference proceedings. He has publications that received various awards such as the Emerald’s Outstanding Paper Award and the best paper award of the International Management Development Association.
Besides his academic activities, he also has broad industry experience as a consultant, company co-founder, and project coordinator. He holds certifications as ISO 9001 lead auditor, occupational health and safety trainer, and consultant for business companies, SMEs in particular.
Ongoing Research Projects:
1) Industry 4.0 Readiness Assessment of SMEs in Kazakhstan: ORAU project, supported by Nazarbayev University, 01/2020 – 12/2022; Role: Principal Investigator
This research aims to: (i) develop a detailed analysis of drivers, critical factors, and challenges of Industry 4.0 for manufacturing SMEs in Kazakhstan, (ii) assess their readiness for Industry 4.0, and (iii) develop a comprehensive digitization framework and road map to improve their capacity to be integrated into the global supply chain.

2) EduInd4.0: Educating graduate students for Industry 4.0.: International project funded by DIKU, Norway, 10/2019 – 10/2022; Role: Eurasia Coordinator
Educating for Industry 4.0 (EduInd4) is an international project developed jointly by the researchers and faculty from Nazarbayev University (NU), University of Stavanger (UIS)-Norway, and Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) with the partnership of various industrial organizations in three countries. The project aims to evaluate and prepare the graduate-level programs in partner countries towards Industry 4.0.

3) PANSUST: Effects of pandemics on sustainable buildings and development of a sustainability assessment tool based on COVID-19 experience: ORAU project, supported by Nazarbayev University, 09/2020 – 12/2022; Role: Co-PI
The research aims at developing sustainability functions for times when millions of people are isolated and have to work from home as in the current COVID-19 pandemic. It plans (i) to maintain the sustainability performance of buildings under pandemic measures, (ii) to develop a building sustainability assessment tool that adequately addresses a building’s sustainability performance under social isolation times.
