Kazakhstanis can determine the probability of COVID-19 infection using a test

Nazarbayev University graduates have developed a “smart” test to estimate the probability of COVID-19 infection, which is now available for everyone to take at home.

The test is in the form of a survey with questions and possible answers and is based on an Artificial Intelligence technology known as a neural network. The neural network calculates the probability of COVID-19 infection in accordance with the programmed information which includes the main symptoms of COVID-19, various risk factors, and the official protocols of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Developers warn that test results do not actually diagnose the disease and should not replace a medical assessment by a doctor. But the test does give users more information at home and helps Kazakhstanis understand their probability of being infected with the COVID-19 virus and whether more actions should be taken – such as visiting a doctor.

The developers’ team spent three months working and improving the interface and functionality of the website-survey. The project mentor Seitzhan Sypabekov is an entrepreneur who graduated from the medical academy and got a doctoral degree in business administration at DBA EU Business School (Switzerland). Two other team members Yussup Tumgoyev and Amanzhol Shungeyev are NU School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (SEDS) alumni. Both are current master students at NU, Yussup in the field of Data Science, and Amanzhol studies Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at the School of Medicine.

“Our overall task is test development.  In our team, Seitzhan provides us with medical expertise.  Amanzhol also works on the medical side, whereas I primarily help with the technical aspects ”, said Yussup Tumgoyev.

To pass the free and simple test it is necessary to go to https://covistop.asia/covid-test/ and spend 5 minutes for answers.

Depending on the test results, the respondent receives further recommendations. Currently, the test is primarily for informational purposes, but the developers plan to add contacts for medical institutions and COVID-19 hotlines, as well as recommended actions one should take in case the test returns a high probability of virus infection.

“The test was moderated by the specialists of the National Scientific Cardiac Surgery Center (NSCSC) in Nur-Sultan. The test results can be integrated into any information systems, including the health care systems of Kazakhstan. The data are personalized. We express our gratitude to all those who supported us and to the specialists who dealt with patients with one of the most complicated cases of COVID-19 infection”, said Yussup Tumgoyev.

It is noteworthy that the test is a noncommercial social project. The test and its results are free for everyone. In the future, the developers plan to increase the accuracy of test results and, in addition to the artificial neural network, want to add machine learning.
