Science Stars 2020

The online final of Science Stars, a national science communication competition for school and college students in Kazakhstan, was held on April 18, 2020.

It was organised by the British Council, OYLA Magazine, Nazarbayev University and the Science Fund, in partnership with Chevron Kazakhstan, to popularize science among youth.

Ten finalists were selected from 260 applications during the first stage of the competition. An online masterclass was conducted for the finalists on April 11-12, 2020, during which they developed their communication and presentation skills.

“I’m delighted that the Science Stars competition is taking place this year for the third time,” said British Council Kazakhstan Director Rowan Kennedy about the annual competition. “Science has a huge role to play in creating a sustainable future for all societies – as well as in helping to address the immediate challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK is among the world’s science powerhouses, producing 16% of the most cited research output globally, and has more Nobel prizes than any other nation apart from the USA. Through Science Stars, the British Council is sharing UK approaches to support Kazakhstan’s ambition to develop its knowledge economy by inspiring young people to take up careers in STEM and become the researchers and scientists of the future.”

The participants presented their three-minute speeches in Kazakh and Russian about an invention, theory or project in technology, engineering, medicine, biology, chemistry, physics or mathematics during the online final. Their presentations will be posted on the British Council’s YouTube channel.

The jury included Science Fund Board Chairman Aryn Orsariyev, National Laboratory Astana Leading Researcher Almagul Kushugulova and Chevron Community and Engagement Coordinator Zhanar Koshpanova. They determined the best speakers and awarded them with valuable prizes: Alibi Sadykov – laptop for 1st place, Kamelya Dossanova and Assem Bissenbay – tablet for 2nd and 3rd place.
