NU graduate with a speech at the 2022 IRENA Youth Forum ‘Youth-led solutions to accelerate the energy transition and achieve climate objectives’

NU graduate Shynggyss Sadyk took part in the 2022 IRENA Youth Forum organised under the theme ‘Youth-led solutions to accelerate the energy transition and achieve climate objectives’ as part of the 12th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

IRENA is an intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation. With more than 180 countries actively engaged, IRENA promotes renewable resources and technologies as the key to a sustainable future and helps countries achieve their renewable energy potential.

The event took place in a virtual setting on January 13, 2022, and highlighted the contribution of young people to developing solutions that can fast-track the transition to renewable energy, and identify the main areas of the global energy transition that require support for youth.

Shyngyss has been selected among a big pool of applicants to speak out in front of major stakeholders of the organization on behalf of the global youth community, together with several other speakers. He graduated from NU in 2019 with a BSc in Chemistry NU SST, currently NU SSH. Shyngyss studies at the dual degree Master’s program in Sustainable Materials engineering: first year at the University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy), and second year at the KU Leuven (Belgium). He focuses on conducting research and his career interests are sustainability and renewable energy. He is a member of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (UN SDG7) Group for Children and Youth which focuses on the SDG 7th target of affordable and clean energy.

As a representative of SDG7 Youth Constituency, Shyngyss gave a brief overview of their activities and pointed out that involving young people in official and formal venues of policy design, enhancing understanding, knowledge skills in relation to sustainable development, effective actions aimed at addressing the needs of people and planet are the main areas of SDG7’s work.

“Our project SDG7 Youth constituency needs more attention from the global governments, countries, and their representative authorities. To be able to raise awareness about SDG7 among the young generation, it would be efficient for us to be engaged in the design of the policies in our countries,” Shyngyss shared his views with forum participants.

The Forum featured a presentation on the outcome of the Global Youth Energy Outlook (GYEO). Moreover, promising young innovators and entrepreneurs from across the energy space showcased their renewables solutions that can help the world meet its climate goals.
