NU Students Achievements 2021

2021 was a very fruitful and successful year for our NU students, as they broke new ground, won awards, and  had many remarkable accomplishments throughout this year. We would like to sincerely congratulate our students, and to acknowledge and share their successes  with our community.

 

The iGEM Team was a winner of a gold medal at the worldwide iGEM competition

The iGEM Kazakhstan team, which consists of NU students, was a winner of a gold medal in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, an annual worldwide synthetic biology event for undergraduates, graduates, and high school students.  

This year, for the first time in the history of iGEM, the iGEM Kazakhstan team were nominated for a multitude of awards, including the Track Award: Best Environment Project, and three Special Awards: Best WikiBest Inclusivity, and Best Sustainability. Additionally, the NU team made its way into the Top 10 Best Projects of the Year in the Undergraduate category, among 255 other teams. 

 

“The Ions” team was the winner of the International Olympiad in  Electrochemical Materials Science

The NU team became the winner of the International Olympiad in Electrochemical Materials Science, which was organized within the framework of the ХІ International Birimzhanov Congress, on chemistry and chemical technology. 

The NU team, named “The Ions,” consisting of Masters students Assel Serikkazyeva, Yerkezhan Yerkinbekova, Aktilek Akhmetova, and PhD student Nurbol Tolganbek, was the winner of the International Olympiad in Electrochemical Materials Science. All members of “The Ions” work in the Battery Group of Nazarbayev University, led by Professor Bakenov, and study Chemical and Materials Engineering in NU SEDS. 

 

Baglan Zharkenov completed an internship at NASA’s Global Space School

NU SEDS first-year student Baglan Zharkenov completed an internship at NASA’s Global Space School. Due to the COVID-19 situation, educational sessions were held in an online format. 

 

Assem Ashimova was a winner of the State Youth Award Daryn 

Assem Ashimova, a PhD student at NU SEDS, was a winner of the State Youth Award, Daryn, in the Science category.  This prize aims to support talented youth for their fruitful scientific, creative, and social activities, as well as achievements in sports. It has been awarded annually since 2017 in 10 categories: literature, science, design and fine arts, journalism, classical music, social activities, sports, theater and cinema, stage, and folk art.

 

Valdemir Kim was a “Best Abstract” winner among Young Nephrologists

Valdemir Kim, a fourth-year student from NUSOM, was a “Best Abstract” winner at The National Congress of Nephrologists, which is organized annually by the Kazakhstan Society of Nephrologists. As part of this Congress, young researchers present an abstract from their research. Valdemir introduced his work investigating various factors affecting the survival of patients with end-stage renal disease after the initiation of renal replacement therapy, and his abstract was chosen as the best among the young nephrologists.

 

NU GSPP students were the regional winners of the Batten Student Simulation Competition

Members of a regional team, NU GSPP students Zhanel Sembayeva (fourth place) and Madi Khanafiya (fifth place) won  the competition for creating anti-crisis government decisions at the 2021 NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition. 

NU GSPP nominated five students to participate in the 2021 NASPAA: Zhanel Sembayeva, Madi Khanafiya, Dilara Omirserikova, Danna Tyo, and Tamila Talasbayeva. The competition was hosted virtually on February 27th and March 6th, 2021 by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) and the University of Virginia Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.

 

Zhanybek Suleiman was the best speaker at the IEIM 2021 international conference

Zhanybek Suleiman, an NU SEDS student, was honored with a Certificate of Excellence for his oral presentation at the 2nd International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Industrial Management (IEIM 2021). Industry 4.0 team members Zhanybek Suleiman, Dinara Dikhanbayeva, Sabit Shaiholla, and Ali Turkyilmaz participated in the 2nd International Conference on IEIM 2021, which was organised from January 8th to the11th, 2021.

 

NU students  became Certified SolidWorks Associates (CSWA) and Certified SolidWorks Professionals

Under the stewardship of NU SEDS Professor Yerkin Abdildin, 117 NU students became Certified SolidWorks Associates (CSWA) and 19 became Certified SolidWorks Professionals (CSWP). The CSWA and CSWP are professional certifications on SolidWorks software, the most widely used 3D CAD package worldwide.

 

Dilyara Begalykyzy was a winner of the international  Volunteer of the Year Award

Dilyara Begalykyzy, an NU SSH third-year undergraduate student in Political Science and International Relations and the president of the Model UN Club,  was a winner of the international Volunteer of the Year Award in the category “Leaders of the Sustainable Development Goals,” awarded in honor of the 50th anniversary of the UN Volunteer Program.

“Volunteer of the Year” is an international award which aims to encourage individuals and groups of volunteers who have contributed to resolving social and public issues. The award was established on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

 

Artyom Davydov and Dmitriy Bessedin were winners of the National Debate Tournament

NU SSH student Artyom Davydov and NU GSPP student Dmitriy Bessedin were winners of the National Debate Tournament in the Russian league, which took place on December 4th and 5th, 2021 in KazGUU. This tournament was organised by the National Debate Federation and the N.Nazarbayev Fund.

 

Liya Koshkarbayeva was a winner at the National Karate Championship

Liya Koshkarbayeva, a first-year student from NUSOM, was the winner of the National Karate Championship, which was organised by the National Olympic Committee in Aktau. Liya surprased her peers in individual kata in the Senior category.

 

The NU SPE team became prize winners at The Regional PetroBowl Qualifier

The NU SPE team took second place at The Regional PetroBowl Qualifier, which was organised online from April 17th to the 18th 2021. The NU SPE team consisted of Baglan Orynbayev (a third-year undergraduate student in Petroleum Engineering), Alinur Muratov and Yernar Tiyntayev (second-year undergraduate students in Petroleum Engineering), Dias Bekeshov (a Chemical Engineering student), and Adilet Aliyev, who was the team captain (a first-year Master’s student in Petroleum Engineering). 

The PetroBowl contest is SPE’s largest student competition. SPE student chapters from around the world participate in this quick-fire quiz, answering technical and nontechnical petroleum industry-related questions.

 

 NU GSB students were selected as the 1st Runner Up at the Asian FinTech Business Plan Competition

An NU GSB team consisting of three MSF students: Fayez Najib, Ruslan Baitlessov, and Pedro Mantilla, under supervision of Dr. Tom Vinaimont, was selected as the 1st Runner Up at the Asian FinTech Business Plan Competition organized by the IFTA (the Institute of Financial Technologists of Asia, Hong Kong).

The team presented a business plan for the launch of SatuPal, an app the team envisions to integrate automated valuation for the buying and selling of small- and medium-sized businesses, with valuations made by experts.

 

Twelve NU teams received grants for the implementation of social projects

On October 1st, 2021, the NU Social Development Fund awarded the winners of the Jas Social Impact competition. Applicants for the competition for social projects consisted of current  students, alumni, employees of NU, and awards were given by  representatives of the Social Development Fund.

12 projects were selected as the winners of the competition, with 11 million tenge in awards granted. For more details follow the link.

 

NU SSH student Alen Temirbay сreated the SargytApp

Alen Temirbay, an NU SSH third-year student, created the SarqytApp, a mobile application through which users can purchase goods with limited expiration dates at a discount. The app has already begun collaboration with 15 companies.

 

The NU SEDS team was the winner of the Republican Student Energy Challenge-2021 competition

The NU SEDS team was a winner of the 2021 Republican Student Energy Challengecompetition, which was organized by the KAZENERGY Association in partnership and with the financial support of Shell Kazakhstan. The PowerX team consisted of third-year students in Electrical and Computer Engineering Ali Almaganbet, Ruslan Moldagazyyev, Doszhan Zhumabek, andNurlybek Kattabayev. The leader of the project was Aidar Alimbayev, an engineer at the Technopark and a research assistant.

The Student Energy Challenge is an annual intellectual competition between students from technical universities in Kazakhstan, who present projects and innovative ideas for solving energy problems. 

 

Adema Yergara has become a Generation Google Scholarship recipient 2021

Adema Yergara, an NU SEDS third-year student, became aGeneration Google Scholarship recipient 2021. Only 20 girls were selected from throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

This scholarship aims to help aspiring women computer scientists excel and become leaders in the field.  The selected students will receive a 7,000 euro award for the 2022-2023 academic year.

 

NU students received the “Tauelsizdik Urpaqtary” grant from the President of Kazakhstan

NU Students were awarded Tauelsizdik Urpaqtary grants at the President’s residence Akorda. Third-yearNU SSH student Arsen Orazbek, raduate of NU GSB Gaukhar Zhakazhanova, and  NU SEDS Master’s student Margulan Yermek were awarded the Tauelsizdik Urpaqtary grants in the amount of three million tenge each.

Arsen Orazbek, an NU SSH third-year student, and his colleagues from the NU Kazakhstan iGEM 2021 team were selected in the “Science” category. 

Two grants in the category “Information Technology” were awarded to Gaukhar Zhakazhanova, an MBA program graduate, and Margulan Yermek, a second-year year NU SEDS Master’s student in Engineering Management.
