PopSci episode 7: Politics are everywhere!
The main guests of the last episode of ‘PopSci’ Associate Professors of SSH PSIR Alexei Trochev and Caress Schenk discuss why politics matter.
In the last episode of ‘PopSci,’ Associate Professors of SSH PSIR Alexei Trochev and Caress Schenk take you along into the world of politics, with all its mind games and nuances. Can you be apolitical if politics are everywhere? Why is political behavior so much more than just voting? And is it possible for politicians to not be corrupt?
According to Associate Professor Caress Schenk, politics is everywhere and it is not possible to be apolitical even if you think you are. “It may be possible to not have a party affiliation or to not have strong viewpoints to political issues, but because politics is literally everywhere, it is impossible to just exempt yourself from that possibility,” says Associate Professor Caress Schenk. Associate Professor Alexei Trochev believes that it is possible for politicians to not be corrupt. He gives the example of Nelson Mandela. However, he notes that there are still many temptations: “There are many temptations and there are many opportunities for politicians to become corrupt. We know that power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
