Nazarbayev University hosted a panel session in Medicine at the V Astana Economic Forum

The Minister of Public Health of the RK, Salidat Kairbekova; the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Council of Nazarbayev University, Almaz Sharman; Nobel prize winner in Chemistry, Ada Jonat (Israel); Nobel prize winner in Physiology or Medicine and professor at the University of Sheffield, Richard John Roberts (UK); Nobel prize winner in Chemistry, Honorary researcher at the Children’s Hospital and Research Institute at Oakland Kary Banks Mullis (USA); MD, academic, professor of inetrnational healthcare at the Professor of International Health at Karolinska Institute, Hans Rosling in Stockholm (Sweden); Director of Health Systems and Public Health Department at the World Health Organization, Dr. Hans Kluge (Belgium); and the Vice Minister of Public Health of the RK, Erik Baizhunussov, delivered their speeches at the panel.

Session participants discussed global health issues, oncology treatment development, public healthcare responsibilty, the role of research in forming state policies in healthcare, raising investments, and so on. In 2011, the President of Kazakhstan approved the National healthcare development program Salamatty Kazakhstan, intended till 2015. The document points to six main healthcare policy directions. Overall from 2005 to 2011, budgeting for the healthcare sector increased 4 times.

The session resulted in a signing of the resolution and also signing of a Memorandum of cooperation between SK-Pharmacy and Sanofi-Aventis Kazakhstan (France), MSD (UK), and Pfizer HCP Corp (USA). Prior directions and effective mechanisms of collaboration were defined at the session. Session particiants also had a chance to visit clinics of the National medical holding JSC.
